Derived in 1973 from Abingdon's highly successful MGB coupe, using the all light alloy Rover V8 engine skilfully squeezed into the basic MGB GT bodyshell with relatively minor alterations, the GT V8 was an exceptionally fast sports-touring car with an easy, long-legged manner of going.
With a higher back axle ratio than its four-cylinder sister, raised to 2.5:1 in overdrive fourth, equal to 28.5mph per 1000rpm, it was also very economical to run. Weight almost equally divided between front and rear axles, it was responsive and delightful to handle. Its gearbox was the tough all-synchromesh 'C' type and the twin SU carburettors mounted to the rear of the engine were given clever intake valves to draw in warm air at first, then cooler air when the engine was warm.
This tidy MGB GT V8 has been owned by the vendor since 1988 having had one previous owner, a local docter from Northumberland. At that time the recorded mileage was 13,000 whilst now this has been considerably increased! The car was restored before its present owner took possession and has subsequently been enjoyed, well maintained and garaged. It will have been driven to the sale from the Lake District and is sold with its registration document and MoT to summer 1998.
