This lot has no reserve. CINCINNATI ART CARVING The Aesthetic Movement was not isolated to New York, or even the Northeast. Throughout the country many craftsmen interpreted the ideals of this movement and incorporated them into their own manufacture. In Cincinnati, Ohio, a movement of woodcarving took place under the leadership of William Fry and Benn Pitman. Both of these men were trained in England as architects and came to Ohio in the mid-nineteenth century where they set up shops and schools. Offering a craft career to men and women, Fry and Pitman trained many in their method of carving. While the craftsmen in the East used a linear interpretation of flora and fauna in their work, Fry and Pitman used a more naturalistic approach. In the words of Pitman, "Adornment- decoration- is the expression of the beautiful as applied to the useful."
