A WOOL JACQUARD WOVEN COVERLET
Woven by Samuel L. Hicks, Chambersburg, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, 1840-1850
Worked in red, navy and light blue and cream wools in two joined rectangular panels of repeating stripes with jacquard woven overlaid pattern of repeating rosettes alternating with columns of roses, the whole bordered with spreadwing eagles and swags and scrolling acorns and foliage terminating at the corners with the weaver's identification block, with three fringed edges and one edge self-bound; together with a similarly joined and patterned coverlet worked in navy, pink, cream and olive wools and framed by repeating urns flanked by birds and swags, the corner blocks inscribed Mathias Klein/1845
