Lana Turner The legend of her "discovery" is timeless, as is the woman. Julia Mildred Francis Turner had fate knocking on her door at the age of 15 when she skipped class at Hollywood High School to enjoy a soda at the local fountain shop and captured the eye of the publisher of The Hollywood Reporter. Hence, the birth of the movie starlet, Lana Turner. As a contract player, she appeared in a few films. In 1938, Lana appeared with Mickey Rooney in Love Finds Andy Hardy. The sight of her soft feminine features struck a sense of lust among many young men, and she became known as the "Sweater Girl." Her mesmerizing face graced the covers of various magazines such as Life and Time-her supple looks only rivaled by Marilyn Monroe. At the beginning of her career, the films she starred in only exhibited her with mediocre acting ability. Lana's leading role in The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) became her breakthrough film, astonishing audiences with her acting and earning her an Oscar nomination. Other films were to follow such as Weekend at the Waldorf (1945) and Peyton Place (1957). However, her well-publicized private life took precedence over her professional career, but she made a comeback with Imitation of Life in 1959. Ironically, the film's story line of an turbulent mother-daughter relationship was a close parallel to Lana's private life with her own daughter, Cheryl Crane. Despite her tumultuous private life, Lana remained beautiful. With her furs and tasteful jewelry, she was always luminous, making the public fall in love with her all over again.
