Sir Robert Filmer (d.1653) was the eldest son of Sir Edward Filmer and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Argall. He was a staunch royalist and suffered greatly during the Civil War. His principal political work, 'Patriarch', was not published until after his death in 1680, but his other well-known treatises on law and government, as well as on usory and witchcraft, were published throughout his lifetime.
