MALLINKROT, Bernard. De ortu ac progressu artis typographicae dissertatio historica. Cologne: Kinch, 1639/40. 4o. Engraved additional title (dated 1639) with portraits of Gutenberg, Fust, the author and the interior of a 17th-century printing-office (some browning throughout, light marginal worming at end). Contemporary limp vellum (light wear to spine and covers). Second edition. Breslauer and Folter credit Mallinkrot with first applying the term incunabula to the earliest period of printing, but it was Cornelius Beughem who was the first to use it to describe the books themselves (See lot 9). Bigmore and Wyman vol. II, p. 16.
