An unusual issue of the third volume of one of the most intriguing works on early printing. Samuel Sotheby printed only 215 copies of his work Principia Typographica, but with a larger printing of the chief contents of the third volume than the previous two volumes. This overrun was given away. The Specimen Notice...is also curious. Composed of some of the more important plates from the profusely illustrated Principia, it was also limited to 215 copies and not published in the ordinary way, but rather offered to the trade by Sotheby & Co. at auction in the year of publication and all selling in two hours.
