Chancery 2o (276 x194 mm). Collation: a-b8; c-z8 A-Z8 AA-FF8 HH10 (a1r title, a1v table, c1r text, HH10v colophon). 426 leaves. 37 lines and headline, double column. Types: 3:147G (title and headlines), 2:109 (text). Initial spaces. Lombard initials, paragraph marks and title flourish supplied in red. (Title and last leaf rehinged and stained, last leaf torn and repaired, 1½-inch internal tear to h1, a few marginal tears or chips, some browning.)
Contemporary [North?] German blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, front cover panelled with outer border of a hunting roll, inner panel suurounded by a narrow roll of the words "AVE MARIA GRACIA PLEN", the central panel filled with a floral diaper pattern built up from two tools, the title ("Lombardica") stamped at top, the back cover differently tooled with larger central panel, remains of two original brass catches, ms. title? (now illegible) on fore-edge (rebacked, worn and rubbed, lacking clasps, new endpapers). Provenance: two contemporary marginal notes (l6v); 18th- or 19th-century inscription on title; George Simon Harcourt, Viscount Nuneham (armorial bookplate); William Ryan, San Francisco (bookplate); Edward M. Hayes (gift label to Albertus Magnus College).
The "Golden Legend," a religious manual composed ca. 1255-1266, containing lively accounts of saints' lives and short treatises on church festivals, was one of the most popular texts of the fifteenth century. First printed in Strassburg ca. 1472, it was reprinted some 70 times before the end of the century, including translations into French, Low and High German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, English, Czech and Catalan. Conrad Dinckmut, active from about 1482 to 1496, specialized in books of a devotional nature, the majority printed in German.
