A Blanc de Chine Figure of Guanyin
18th century
Shown seated atop a tall pierced rockwork base, her hands resting upon the raised left knee and hidden within the long sleeves of the gracefully draped robes, with a bundle of scrolls placed on an outcropping of rock to one side, her hair dressed in knotted tresses beneath a short cowl, and her face modeled with gentle expression, the back incised with two indecipherable marks, one a double-gourd maker's mark, the other a square mark, all under a blue-tinted white glaze

Lot Essay

A nearly identical figure with arms resting in this very unusual position, but lacking the cowl over the hair, is in the Seattle Asian Art Museum, and illustrated in Fujiao diaosu mingpin tulu (Images of Famous Buddhist Sculpture), Beijing, 1997, p. 517, no. 497.
