Lot Essay

Drs F. Kuyvenhoven has kindly confirmed this attribition, noting that an alternative attribution to the artist's brother Josephus Augustus Knip (1777-1849) cannot be ruled out. It is often difficult to distinguish the unsigned works of these two artists, who worked very closely together, possibly even on the same drawings.
The composition was obviously inspired by the work of Claude.
