Lot Essay

Richmond Castle in Yorkshire was begun in 1071 and occupies an impressive cliff-top position overlooking the River Swale. Local legend records that a tunnel once led from the bottom of this cliff to a cavern where King Arthur and his knights sat around the Round Table. Ewbank was a pupil of Alexander Nasmyth and in 1826 was one of the founding members of the Scottish Royal Academy.
