Lot Essay

William Keppel (1793-1867) succeeded his father the Rev. George, 5th Viscount Barrington, Prebendary of Durham, and Rector of Sedgefield, in 1829. He was M.P. for Berkshire c.1837-57. In 1823 he married the Hon. Jane Elizabeth Liddell (d. 1883), daughter of the 1st Baron Ravensworth. William Keppel died in 1867 and was succeeded by his eldest son George William Keppel, P.C.
Leighton's first biographer, Mrs Russell Henry Barrington, was married to the nephew of the sitter.
