A Painted, Carved and Parcel Gilt Wood Manuscript Cover
Tibet, 13th/14th Century
Deeply carved in tripartite relief featuring from left Shakyamuni Buddha seated upon a lotus within a niche flanked by the astamangala and vyalas supporting a Garuda finial with makaras issuing praying nagarajas, the central section with Prajnaparamita seated within a recessed niche above an altar carved with foliate scrolls and flanked by the five tathagathas on lotus cushions surrounded by swirling clouds, the rightmost panel with Vairocana at center surrounded by Akshobya, Amitabha, Ratnasambhava and Amoghasiddhi on lotuses and topped by a 'Face of Glory' mask, one side carved with cloud scrolls bearing the first Tibetan syllable, ka, richly gilt overall
