Very finely painted with the lama seated on an elaborate brocade throne with acolytes before him wearing red and orange brocade robes and a red peaked hat, his face encircled by a blue nimbus and shaded by an overhanging tree, set amidst a mountain landscape with flowing waterfalls and craggy outcrops, Vajravarahi depicted at top right in a variegated aureole dancing over a prostrated figure and Mahakala at lower center holding a karttrka and kapala and surrounded by red-orange flames, mounted in Chinese brocade with four-line Tibetan inscriptions containing mantras for Vajravarahi and Mahakala

Lot Essay

Dharma Wangchug (1127-1200) was the founder of the Barom Kagyu School. This thangka would have been numbered 5 from a set of 12 illustrating the previous lives of Jonang Taranatha.
