Thailand, Mon-Dvaravati, 8th Century
Standing on a waisted round lotus pedestal, his right hand with incised palms raised in vitarka mudra and holding the tip of his diaphanous robe in his left, his face with a benign expression with downcast eyes, his tightly curled hair rising to a conical ushnisha, with a separately cast flaming mandorla, the bronze with an attractive deep black patina

Lot Essay

Rather than strict frontality the stance here is more relaxed, blending Gupta tradition with regional features such as more accentuated shoulders. The bronze has a lustrous deep black patina, likely due to a high tin and possibly silver content in the alloy.
