Lot Essay

Born in La Rochelle in 1825, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (d.1905) settled in Paris in 1846. He was a pupil of Picot at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was awarded in 1850 the Grand prix de Rome.
By the 1880s, Bouguereau's reputation as a leading figure of French Academic painting was internationally established and, with his assumption of the presidency of the Société des artistes français in 1881, he gained undisputable influence over the Paris Salon.
