Although based on the 17th century Italian models, the taste for which saw a strong revival from the 1840's onwards and was launched by the various members of the Rotschild family, the present cabinet has very strong eastern influences. Indeed, in the latter part of the 19th century, cities such as Constantinople, Cairo, Baghdad, Damascus and Bombay become highly fashionable, especially due to high publicity provided by their very exotic stands at the various Great Exhibitions, not to mention the newly built Suez canal or the proclamation of Queen Victoria as the new Empress of India. The impact on fashion and interiors was immediate, explaining the numerous domes, minaret-styled finials and other crescent moons appearing on furniture at the time, such as the Turkish-looking pediment of the present cabinet, the silver Muslim foliate decor of the panels or the very exotic-looking dragon feet.
