A near pair of French ormolu-mounted marquetry and parquetry commodes

Each surmounted by a 'D'-shaped and moulded veined white marble top, above two drawers inlaid sans traverse, headed by a sun-burst, above a cartouche depicting a nature morte, flanked to each side by a putto, emblematic of Bienfaisance and Justice, the rounded sides each fitted with a cupboard door centred by a trophy, flanked to each side by a standing figure, respectively emblematic of Courage, Force, Prudence and Tempérence, above a shaped apron centred by the French Royal coat-of-arms within ribbon-tied cornucopiae, on four tapering acanthus feet

This commode is a copy of the celebrated model delivered by Riesener in 1775 to Louis XV for the bedroom of his private apartments at Versailles. It was originally centred by a figure of Minerva crowning the Royal cyphers with a laurel wreath. This panel was replaced at the Revolution by the actual nature morte, a less regal feature. It is now in the Musée Condé, Château de Chantilly.
