Surmounted by a circular shallow dish centred by a butterfly, flanked to each side by a scroll handle with a panther's head, above a baluster stem flanked to each side by a flying angel, on a stepped spreading base inscribed E. CORNU, 24 BDR DES ITALIENS

Lot Essay

The sculptor Eugène Cornu (d.1875) owned marble and onyx mines in Algeria. Onyx, known since Antiquity and used by both the ancient Egyptians and Roman civilisations, was first shown at the 1863 International Exhibition in London to great acclaim.
