A Lacquer Writing Box (Suzuribako)
Edo-Meiji Period (second half 19th Century)
The small, square writing box designed on the cover with a man and his attendant in Portuguese dress walking a dog along a riverbank under a willow tree, the river rendered in gold with slightly, raised, combed lines to delineate waves and the shore gold and nashiji with okibirame edges, the willow of hiramaki-e and takamaki-e and the rocks also raised and highlighted with okibirame, the sky area roiro and nashiji, the pantaloons of the attendant orange-red lacquer patterned with gold waves and his jacket gold lacquer, the pantaloons and jacket of the other man gold and silver lacquer, his hat and the dog silver lacquer, and the hair of both figures reddish-brown; the underside of the lid decorated with gold chrysanthemums flowering over a brush fence in low relief, some of the blossoms covered by gold foil and the background roiro and nashiji, the lower interior also roiro and nashiji with additional diamond-shaped crane medallions of gold hiramaki-e, the two rectangular utensil trays removable as is the center tray holding the inkstone and circular metal mizuire, undersides of the tray, lower interior, sides of the box and base matching roiro and nashiji
