A Lacquer Writing Box (Suzuribako)

The quatrefoil box designed on the lid with rocks, trees and grasses by a meandering stream in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with accents of e-nashiji and uchikomi on a roiro-nuri ground applied with hirame, the cloud band transversing the lid also gold embellished with okibirame and the three hills beyond raised slightly from the ground and sprinkled with kimpun; the underside of the lid decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e and low-relief takamaki-e with wisteria vines and two mandarin orange crests of the Ii family on a nashiji ground which are repeated on the lower interior of the box; fitted with two removable implement trays, the left one containing an oblong inkstone and rectangular copper mizuire, the bases of the tray and below them roiro and nashiji and the sides and base of the writing box roiro and hirame
