A rare Frechen stoneware dated armorial pewter-mounted bellarmine
Circa 1597
(Bartmannkrug) the tiger-glazed vermiculated globular body applied with a large frontal medallion containing a helmetted crested coat of arms accolées, a lozenge shield of the Wittelsbach house of Bavaria, and a lion rampant shield of Palatinate Rhenania, underneath 1597, flanked by two medallions containing a jester or buffoon holding various playful attributes, surrounded with a caption with a long humorous text in Niederdeutsch, the neck applied with a grotesque bearded male mascaroon, with twisted loop handle, the tiny domed cover connected with an upturned thumbpiece to the handle
