THE PROPERTY OF THE LATE RAOUL MILLAIS, ESQ., (1901-1999) Raoul Millais was the only surviving son of the explorer, naturalist, wildlife artist and big game hunter John Guille Millais, and a grandson of Sir John Everett Millais, the Pre-Raphaelite artist and President of the Royal Academy. Educated at Winchester, where he found game-shooting and fishing expeditions more to his taste than academic work, he departed from the school of his own volition at the age of 17. However, the artistic talent of his family was strong within him and he entered the Byam Shaw Art School in 1919 and went on to the Royal Academy Schools in 1921. Between the two World Wars he achieved a considerable name for equestrian portraiture. Hunting scenes, horses and personalities, were later followed by studies of famous racehorses. Amongst these he painted Big Game and Sun Chariot for King George VI and Colorist II for Sir Winston Churchill. During World War II he served with the Scots Guards and for a time was responsible for guarding Rudolf Hess after his mysterious landing in Scotland. He executed a number of fine drawings of his Nazi captive. In earlier days hunting, and then stalking, fishing and game-shooting were his passions. At the latter he was an outstanding performer until late in life. His trim military appearance afforded him great style in the field
