Lot Essay
This gun is Woodward's first ever over-and-under gun and it was completed in 1909. The entry in the maker's books refers specifically to the barrels being 'placed vertically (one underneath the other) instead of (horizontally) ,,,,, arranged to fire bottom barrel first.'
The Woodward over-and-under design most commonly encountered (please see Lots 322-323) was patented in 1913 and it is interesting to note that there is absolutely no similarity between the two patterns. No 6078 is likely to have been a unique order and it is of particular interest that Woodward's built a gun originally weighing 8lb. 15oz. for a 12-bore gun firing 2½in. cartridges. The stock oval is inscribed 'Lt. Col. 'RED' Cundiff'
