Nottingham Forest F.C. won the European Cup for the first time in season 1978-79 by defeating Malmo 1-0 at the Olympiastadion, Munich, on 30th May 1979 before 57,500 spectators, Trevor Francis scoring on the stroke of half-time. On their way to this historic win, Forest defeated Liverpool (the European Cup holders) 2-0 on aggregrate; AEK Athens 7-2 on aggregate; Grasshoper-Club 5-2 on aggregate and in the semi-final, I.F.C. Koln 4-3 on aggregate.
