AN ITALIAN BAROQUE ORMOLU AND LEATHER TRAVELLING ALTAR
Late 17th/early 18th century
The gilt-tooled brown-leather dome case, inlaid with the arms of the Della Rovere family, enclosing a cream silk, gold thread and polychrome painted altar, with a nun with her hands in prayer standing before two scrolling candelarms, and a round drawer

Commissioned by a Cardinal from either the della Rovere or Lante della Rovere family.

Lot Essay

According to Crollalanza, no.425, the arms are either those of the della Rovere or Lante della Rovere family. The 'galero' or mitre is that of a Bishop rather than a Cardinal, and the patron appears to have been either a member of the Order of Malta or a Cavalieri di S. Stefano.
