A PAIR OF ITALIAN BAROQUE WALNUT ARMCHAIRS
Mid-17th-century and later, the late 16th/early 17th Century Franco-Flemish tapestry covers associated
Each pair of scrolled and fluted finials above a rectangular backrest
covered a tapestry scene of a draped man beneath a foliate trellis on caryatid supports, a lion and monkey at his feet, within a scrolled foliate surround, above a padded rectangular seat covered in tapestry with fruiting and flowering foliage, flanked by straight molded armrests with scrolled handrests on ring and baluster-turned supports, above square legs joined front and back as pairs by stretchers, the front stretcher centered by a seed pod flanked by scrolled acanthus, each stamped with the French & Co. inventory numbers in black ink, one 44949 three times and 36923 once and the other 44949 four times and 36923 once, the side stretchers later, with the marque-au-feu FB flanking the arms of Navarre, the bottoms of the feet replaced or extended, the frames altered to fit the tapestries (2)
