One side with separate panels each with a circular frieze to the top above a rectangular cartouche shaped frieze above a square frieze, all decorated with courtly figures within a landscape populated with pagodas, trees and birds, surrounded by a foliate scrolled border, the reverse with a scrolling foliate border and bronze carrying handles shaped as ducal coronets, engraved ASA

Lot Essay

Scion of a distinguished Irish family, the 9th Earl of Bessborough and his French wife Roberte de Neuflize purchased Stansted Park in 1923. Employing the architect Harry Goodhart-Redell, they furnished the house with both inherited and purchased works of art, and it is thus difficult to trace the original provenance of much of the collection without supporting documentation. This screen could equally well therefore have originally stood at Roehampton (Parkstead), the 2nd Earl's villa executed by Sir William Chambers from 1760; at Bessborough, Ireland; or been inherited from either Lady Charlotte Schreiber or the Barons de Neuflize.
