Lot Essay

This is an example of a type of sallet well known from contemporary illustrations, but of which few are known to survive, among them helmets in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (inv. nos. 30 3000 & 3001), the Royal Armouries, Leeds (inv. no. IV. 424), and the Wallace Collection (inv. no. A73). Boccia 1982 (p. 32) ascribes the Gwynn helmet to circa 1480-90, but the style of the fluting suggests that it dates from within the 16th century
