In furtherance of Manufacture of their road-going production cars, Maserati perceived the need to provide a sporting car for the family man. Their now ageing 5000GT model could not fill the role, so that a new model was added to the range at the 1963 Turin Auto Salon. Transparently named this four-door saloon was however still conceived utilising race-proven design, manifest in the mechanical specification. A powerful yet smooth V-8 motor of 4,135 litres capacity, coupled to a 5-speed gearbox, suspension still following racing traditions even with De-Dion rear axle, providing a car which handled well and had genuine turn of speed with a maximum of around 130mph. In addition of course, this could carry four or five adults and luggage with roomy comfort in its luxurious interior. The stylish coachwork was created by Pietro Frua and the car incorporated many features as standard, which were costly extras for most manufacturers, including electric windows, power-steering, air-conditioning and leather interior.

It is interesting to note that the vendor thorough his close association with the Factory and his sales agency outlet, was responsible in part for the development, and subsequent sales of the first series cars, of which almost a third of the production was sold in the Rome area. In consequence he had a very soft spot for these cars and with a growing family himself, acquired this car more than 20 years ago, and in keeping with his business has maintained this vehicle with the same intensity as all the cars in his ownership. Once again here is an example of the model that would be extremely hard to better. The mileage covered is minimal, the paintwork is excellent, the cars is rust free, chrome-work is superb, the car runs smoothly and is perfectly maintained, and the interior is absolutely immaculate with dark blue leather seats and trim, offset by beautifully veneered, polished wood door cappings, dashboard and steering wheel rim. This exemplary vehicle set a standard unmatched by its rivals and remains today in immaculate condition of presentation ready for the road or for the show arena.
