16,000 Kilometres from new.
1966 MASERATI MISTRAL 4000 GRAN TURISMO COUPÉ
COACHWORK BY FRUA.
Registration No. EU registered.
Chassis No. AM109A1.1256
Engine No. AMRRed with black leather interior.
Engine; 6-cylinders in-line, twin overhead camshafts, dual ignition, fuel injection, 4-litres, 245bhp at 5,500rpm; Gearbox: 5-speed manual; Suspension: independent, front by coil-springs and lower wishbone: rear, live axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and telescopic shock absorbers all round; Brakes: hydraulic four-wheel servo disc. Left-hand drive.
Following their decision to wind down the production of racing cars, the Maserati Company concentrated fully on manufacturing a wider range of high-performance road-going machines, and having already made a successful foray into the Gran Turismo market with the ‘3500’ models, decided there was room for an even more definitive two-seater GT model in their range. The result was the very attractive Mistral, which featured an enlarged version of the six-cylinder twin-cam engine, bored out to 3.7 litres. The chassis was based on standard practice but this new car had a shorter wheelbase, which much improved the handling, fuel-injection, servo-disc brakes and was kitted out with Borrani alloy-rimmed knock-off wire wheels; all of which made it look very sporting in appearance. This was underlined by the very stylish and distinctive coachwork designed by Frua and the car made its first appearance in 1963. In later models it was refined and improved with a further engine enlargement to 4-litres, which increased capacity provided the cars with a top speed of 150mph.
This remarkable example has covered just 16,000 kilometres from new having been the property of the vendor for over 25 years, during which time it has been carefully cosseted and meticulously maintained in his ownership. The bright red paintwork is superb, the chrome brilliant and the interior unmarked, in almost as-new condition. When delivered, the car had all the most up to date features, including the rare twin-plug head, whilst the interior accessories included electric windows, the special ‘Autoclima’ air-conditioning unit and of course the must-have 8-track stereophonic sound system by ‘Sonar-Voxson’, complete with a Burt Bacharach tape! The car is absolutely rust-free and has covered so few miles as to be scarcely run-in. It must be one of the most original examples to be found and it is offered with a selection of new old-stock spares including a Touring-kit, all in their original factory packaging, whilst the spare-wheel looks as if it has never been used. This car truly represents a wonderful opportunity for the connoisseur of originality and authenticity.
