Lot Essay

Cf. P.D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures Of The Victorian Era (1970), p. B196, fig. 53. Fitzgerald was an Irish Nationalist and member of the 'United Irishmen' involved in organising a French invasion of Ireland in the late 1790's. The plot was betrayed and Fitzgerald was condemed as a traitor and died from injuries received from his seizure by the Dublin police.
