Lot Essay

Cf. P.D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures Of The Victorian Era (1970), p. F461, figs. 20 and 21. Master M'Grath, a black greyhound belonging to Lord Lurgan, won the Waterloo Cup in 1868, 1869, and defeated Pretender belonging to Mr Punchard in 1871. The Illustrated London News of March 11th, 1871, reported that 'His speed was terrific and his cleverness and killing powers equal to this; indeed, he never gave any of his opponents a chance'.
