Les Pivoines (the peonies)

Flowers and women are the favourite subject-matters of Le Pho. The artist's first known portrait of Vietnamese beauty are dated back to his formative years at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the present lot which is dated 1942 could well be one of the earliest known floral composition of the artist.
