Lot Essay

Raza began painting in watercolour as a student since it was the preferred medium in art institutions at the time. Landscapes were always a favourite theme. They were executed in bright organic colours that are strongly reminiscent of the Indian countryside. This work is an early watercolour and predates Raza's final move to abstraction. Rudy von Leyden describes Raza as "a painter of light, deft, fluid watercolours of landscapes and town scenes." (Geeti Sen, Bindu; Space and Time in Raza's Vision, New Delhi, 1997, p. 27.)
