James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766) was born shortly before his father was deposed, and spent most of his early life at his father's court in exile in France. On his father's death in 1701 he was proclaimed James III of England, but due to his refusal to renounce Catholicism, The English parliament passed a bill of attainder disallowing a Roman Catholic from being crowned King. He made several half-hearted attempts to regain his crown by force, and his son Charles Edward, the Young Pretender, or Bonnie Prince Charlie, precipitated the last futile Jacobite rebellion in 1745.
