The oval tray with solid gallery decorated with trailing foliage, with a pierced handle at each end, stamped to the reverse 'WONTNER & BENSON LONDON', on an oval stand with cabriole legs, each headed by a flower

Lot Essay

Wontner and Benson, are known to have worked from St. John Street, Clerkenwell between 1803-4 and appear to have specialised in japanned papier-maché. A stamped papier maché tray by Wontner and Benson was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 21 March 1989, lot 68.
