A GEORGE IV ORMOLU HANGING COLZA-LIGHT
The shallow dished triangular body with an acanthus-wrapped satyr-mask at each corner and a central lappeted and berried finial, with three bacchic-mask loops, each with a later hanging-chain, now fitted for electricity with three turned light-fitments each with a later frosted- glass bulbous shade, lacking the colza-oil reservoir, lid and corona

Lot Essay

This colza-lamp is designed in the early 19th Century antique manner, popularised by the connoisseur Thomas Hope in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration of 1807. With its masks and thyrsus finial wrapped by Roman acanthus, it relates to one, complete with colza reservoir and foliate corona supplied to George Wilbraham, Esq. (d. 1852), for Delamere House, Cheshire and sold by the Wilbraham family, in these Rooms, 6 February 1997, lot 17.
