The X-frame trellis design of splat relates to a well-known set of chairs, possibly designed by Sir John Soane (d. 1837) when he was architect to the Bank of England, a post he held from 1788 until 1833. A set of 'twenty mahogany trellis chairs, the backs and legs reeded and fluted' was supplied by the cabinet-maker David Bruce (d. 1823) in 1809 for the Governor's Room at the Bank of England (R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev. ed., 1954, p. 307, fig. 264 and G. Beard & C. Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 121). A similar set is preserved at the Sir John Soane Museum, Lincoln's Inn Fields.

A set of eight chairs of the above model was sold by Trevor Briscoe, Esq., Sotheby's London, 13 October 1967, lot 108. A set of twelve are illustrated in Carlton Hobbs: Catalogue Number Three, 1992, no. 9.
