A SET OF TEN WHITE, BLACK AND GOLD-PAINTED OPEN ARMCHAIRS
Four Regency and six of later date
Each with tablet toprail depicting mythological scenes flanked by urn finials above a pierced arched back, the arm-supports decorated with foliage, the seat with squab cushion covered in coral material, on ring-turned tapering legs decorated with husks and swagged drapery, on pinched and turned feet, one seat distressed, the four Regency chairs with minor refreshments to the decoration, restorations and some later cross-strutts (10)
Provenance
Bought by the vendor's father, probably in the 1940s.

Lot Essay

The arcaded chair back with decorative tablet relates to a pattern in Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 2nd ed., 1789 (pl. 9).
