The eared rectangular top with gilt-tooled green leather-lined writing-surface, above a long frieze drawer to each short side and two simulated short drawers to each long side, above a panelled pedestal with a door to each short side, one side enclosing a fitted interior of pigeon-holes and a simulated door to each long side, on bronzed metal paw feet and countersunk anti-friction metal castors, later handles, one drawer later

Lot Essay

The panelled 'altar' pedestal of the 'Grecian' library table relates to a design of a centre table by Richard Brown in Rudiments of Drawing Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture, 2nd ed., 1822. A similar brown oak and ebonised library table, but with turned column and four splayed legs was sold by William Mazer (+), Christie's New York, 21 January 1999, lot 551 ($13,225).
