Lot Essay

The pattern for the fretted ribbon guilloche of flowered trellis relates to that of an open-pedimented bookcase published in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, pl. LXV.
A closely related clothes-press was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 8 Febrary 1996, lot 203 (illustrated with the wrong pediment).
