Lot Essay

The stool, which has husks festooning the angles and a central medallion on its fluted rail, has a serpentined frame in the Louis XV manner such as features on a chair illustrated in Thomas Malton's, Complete Treatise on Perspective, 1775 (pl. XXXIII, fig. 313). It is en suite with a pair of armchairs in the collection assembled by Sylvia Phyllis Adams, formerly of Copper & Adams, that was sold at Bonhams, 8 May 1996, lot 41.
An almost identical stool, formerly in the collection of Mrs. A.E. Roach, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, 21 February 1997, lot 116.
