Carved overall in foliate and floral cameo and intaglio relief, each with lion-mask finials flanking the toprail above spirally-fluted supports, the back and seat upholstered in red and white cotton, on square tapering flared legs, the front feet on castors, five stamped twice 'GILLOW', one stamped three times and one numbered '9936', minor variations in carving (6)

Lot Essay

The lion-headed chairs, manufactured by Gillow of Oxford Street, relate to a pattern in the French Empire manner, illustrated in F. Ewerbeck, Damenzimmer-Polsterstuhl, Aachen, 1874, p. 59. (G. Himmelheber Deutsche Möbelvorlagen 1800-1900', Munich, 1988, p. 435, fig. 2877.)
