Lot Essay
The mirror's Grecian-pedimented frame supported by brass-enriched columns in the French manner, relates to a fire-screen designed by the connoisseur Thomas Hope and illustrated in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807 (pl. XIV). S. Jamar of Wardour Street, 'French Cabinet maker' manufacturing 'all sorts of French Furniture' advertised his works in 1819 as 'equal to any made in Paris'. The following year he moved to premises in Gerrard Street, where he traded until 1826. A related pedimented and columned bookcase was sold from the collection of the late Edward Rice, Esq., Dane Court, Tilmanstone, Kent, in these Rooms, 4 April 1974 (lot 135) and is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 280, fig. 521.
