A delicate small scale exhibition standard display model of a stationary steam plant built by H.Perry and exhibited at the Great Exhibition, London, October 1851
with riveted copper Cornish boiler with fittings including water gauge with glass protector and shut-off cocks, level test cocks, weight and lever safety valve, float and weight and lever controlled water level, steam pressure controlled damper, the simulated brick casing with steps, banister, handrailings and single square chimney. The engine is a tank mounted single cylinder condensing rotative beam engine, the cylinder approximately ¾in. bore x 1½in. stroke, mounted on a raised floor standing on four bun feet with outward facing truncated valve with separate steamways and curved bracket supporting the anchor links, the valve operated by a lattice 'lift off' eccentric rod with balance weight, quadrants and barrelled rods coupled to a shaped crosshead. Cylinder details include studded stuffing box with square headed bolts, cylinder head lubricator, pinned crosshead and wedged and cottered drop links. The decorative beam is mounted in shaped trunnions supported on four tapered, inclined columns with centrally mounted rope and gear driven Watt governor, linkage and valve, rod driven air and feed pumps and delicately fluted barrelled connecting rod, all bearings being gibbed and cottered, the crankshaft running in two main bearings, the outboard trunnion supported on two tapered columns, spoked flywheel and outboard pulley to allow manual operation of the engine via a handle on the outside of the base. Other details include copper pipework with flanged joints, boiler mud door with two bridge pieces and lifting eye, panelled tank with hotwell and crank drip tray, the whole finished in silver plated and polished brightwork, green and simulated brick and stone and mounted on a marble bed (cracked) on four bun feet, copper plate engraved Henry Perry Bromley Middlesex, and wooden base. Measurements overall --17 x 18in. (43 x 45.7cm.). Domed glass cover (later). Certificate inscribed Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations, 1851, United Kingdom, Class V, No. 112. I hereby certify that Henry Perry was an Exhibitor Exhibition Hyde Park, London, 15th October 1851, with facsimile signature Albert, President of the Royal Commission, framed and glazed.
