Lot Essay

Thomas Telford (1757-1834), one of the great engineers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, was born the son of a shepherd. He is chiefly remembered for building the bridge across the Menai Strait and the Pont Cysylte aqueduct. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.

There is a similar cameo illustrated in The Story of Telfordi, Gibb, London, 1935, p.208
