A late 17th Century German brass graphometer,
unsigned, in the manner of Johann Melchoir Hager, the inset compass with fine blued-steel needle, with pyramid-shaped and eared brass cap, the finely engraved silvered dial with distinctive numerals, the glass cover with rope-twist retaining ring, the protractor base plate with scales divided 0°-180°/180°-0°, the inner scale sub-divided to 30" intervals, with two fixed folding sights, each with viewing slit and vertical bar, the alidade with two similar sights, the spring tensioners located by cheese-head screws, the underside with mounting for the ball-and-socket joint staff attachment, located by four ears and tensioned by shaped butterfly and key shaft and nut, contained in the original red-stained, chamois leather-lined, leather-covered shaped case, the underside with three moulded star studs, the case fitted for three hooks and eyes -- 11¾in. (29.8cm.) wide, and the associated fruitwood tripod, the slender tapering legs hinged to the baluster-shaped central support by three brass wing-nuts and steel wing centre nut
