An early 19th-Century oxidised-brass surveying theodolite,
signed on the horizontal plate Troughton London, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, object glass dust cap, bubble level with graduated ivory scale divided 0-6 (x 2), located in twin Y-supports with fold-over clamps, each having a cork pad and a securing pin, the limb secured to the vertical half-circle with silvered scale on one side divided in two quadrants, with silvered vernier, the other wide with scale for Diff. of Hypo. & Base, the supporting frame with axis, with tangent-screw fine adjustment and vernier magnifier located on a swinging arm, secured to the compass box, the compass with silvered dial, edge-bar needle with agate cap, with sliding clamp, the horizontal plate with level and cross bubble, three silvered vernier scales to read over the chamfered silvered horizontal circle, with single magnifier, tangent-screw fine adjustment and clamp, on truncated vertical support with further fine adjustment and four-screw tripod mounting -- 16in. (40.6cm.) high (telescope in horizontal position)
