An unusual 18th-Century German gilt-brass mounted lodestone,
unsigned, the case with suspension loop, one side with German gothic text relating to the lodestone surrounded by engraved foliate decoration, the opposite side with a central panel with similar engraving and radiating oval motif, the base of the case secured by long exterior-mounted screws, the base with a simple engraved compass with the four cardinal points, the lodestone with two protruding polar bars, marked S and N -- 3¾in. (9.5cm.) wide
